While Swimmers Ran From Violence, Popular Photo Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, heard loud noises reverberating around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a duo who had run up the hill soaked, she heard someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved into something that surely every part of you would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of valour in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to many those hurt.

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting commenced through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a local official.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches secure for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
